Mokau
Travelled to mokau 4.30 Sunday. Usual launch spot at river mouth, was not what I expected dumping on the bar out as far as I could see in the fog.
Launched under bridge, fought incoming tide down river to mouth heading to go around to left to bay behind the reef, which is sheltered from swell where we usually go on low tide you drag yak around. When we got to mouth the tide was too high to do that so we headed into the breakers getting smashed by the surf .
A mouthful of salt water and a lot of skill and I made it.
Time to fish.
First spot not out to far a lot of small fish mullet ,ky,snapper ,gurnard
,shark(grey hammerhead).
2nd spot out deeper 1 minute into it, 2 rods down loaded with squid. Big strike on line, peeling out like mad. Dropped anchor and spent 20minutes getting dragged around in circles, and about 200metres with my mate yelling see you in aussie ha ha.
Once it got to surface it was stuffed those small tica kayak rods
are good value.
Got flipped on the way back in on bar, big nose dive right on high tide, paddle leash snapped that was freaky .
Great fish 11.8 kgs 98cms long the most exciting fish I have ever caught
on kayak if I had not been able to drop anchor I don't believe I would
have got it in .
Cheers, Leyton
